This role reports directly into the Head of Operations and you will be responsible for overseeing the tenanted and leased pubs in the Venture division within the Southern geographical area.
This role is responsible for recruiting, leading, inspiring and coaching Business Development Managers, to ensure their pubs maximize the customer experience, sales and profit in your area within a compliant regime.

You will contribute to the strategic direction of our Venture Pubs and act as conduit of change, through the Format Leadership Groups or nominated projects.

You will spend the majority of your time out in trade visiting your pubs and coaching your Business Development Managers, with the remaining time in Head Office. You will be responsible for leading a team of self employed operators in making decisions about how best to drive sales and service to the needs of our customers. You will be responsible for meeting financial KPI’s and hold budget responsibility for your area. You will advise your operators on the best ways to drive profitability for their business.

As well as working closely with your operators, you will also build effective working relationships with central support teams such as customer service teams, recruitment, training, finance and marketing as well as liaising with suppliers and local authorities.

 Key Accountabilities:

  • Jointly sets the strategic direction of the business.

  • Understand the consumer and market in your region in order to develop plans to maximise sales and drive footfall.

  • Achieve annual budgeted task.

  • Maximize the potential of your Business Development Managers to deliver operational excellence, developing their personal and business skills through training, coaching and mentoring.

  • Motivate each manager and operator towards an end goal which is of mutual benefit to them and Marston’s.

  • Review the managers and operators progress around achieving sales and profit targets through regular one to one meetings and business development review meetings.

  • Ensure you have a people plan for your area, working closely with the resourcing team to identify and develop talent on your area through strong succession planning.

  • Get to know your competition by conducting regular networking activity to build a talent pipeline and to ensure future people needs are addressed and helping your operators understand that competition comes in different forms, not just other pub businesses.

  • Provide business advice being unafraid to tackle challenging situations and conversations. Find resolutions to conflict in both a management and a business relationship capacity.

  • Full P&L responsibility with a focus on driving sales and profit and delivering great service in every business.

  • Ensure our businesses are operated to the highest standards and exceed legislative guidelines.

  • Ensure the BDR process is fully utilised in order to maximise the businesses.

  • Recruit and retain the best BDM’s and pub operators.

  • Deliver a rolling programme of capital investment into our sites underpinned by commercial decisions on the type of investment that will work for Marston’s, our customers and local communities.

  • Embrace and drive understanding of our key trading formats ensuring Marston’s guidelines and procedures are met at all times.

  • Ensure compliance with the Pubs Code 2016.
